In April 2014, Elcome was awarded a subcontract by Frequentis AG, Austria, for building a maritime communications network that will provide the obligatory shore-based terrestrial and celestial Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS). The new network will offer complete communications coverage over all different sea areas around Oman, both near to and far from shore including A1, A2, and A3 zones. This includes an upgrade of the existing NAVTEX broadcasting system of Maritime Safety Information (MSI). As a value added service, an Automatic Identification System (AIS) shall be introduced with the new network. The project scope of Elcome covers supply, installation, training, and maintenance of various equipment.
